Quem foi Zumbi dos Palmares?
Em 1655, um recém-nascido foi um dos poucos sobreviventes de um ataque a um vilarejo no Quilombo dos Palmares. O bebê foi levado e dado a um padre, Antônio Melo. Padre Antônio batizou a criança como Francisco. Francisco aprendeu português, latim e religião.
Numa noite de 1670, aos 15 anos, Francisco fugiu para o quilombo modificando o seu nome para Zumbi, que no dialeto quer dizer "Senhor da Guerra". Passado algum tempo, Zumbi foi eleito chefe de uma aldeia e, com muita raça e pulso firme, logo se tornou comandante geral do exército de Palmares.
Transformou Macaco, sede de Palmares, numa grande fortaleza. Por dezesseis anos venceu os ataques à sua terra. Nas senzalas, acreditava-se que Zumbi era imortal. Porém a batalha final estava próxima e em 20 de novembro de 1695, um ano depois da derrota de Palmares, Zumbi morreu em uma emboscada. Traído por um amigo, teve a sua cabeça degolada e exposta na praça pública de Recife, para mostrar aos negros que não era imortal, e aos brancos, o quanto este lhe eram superiores. Zumbi morreu, mas seus ideais perduram no coração da raça negra.
