Alexander Sutherland Neill
Nasceu em Forfar, Escócia, em 1883. Ele era filho de um mestre-escola, homem puritano que regrava sua classe com um bastão de ferro. Neill não realizou o curso secundário no período regular, como os seus irmãos. O educador era tímido e não gostava muito dos livros, adorava trabalhar com as mãos.
Neill foi diretor de uma escola primária ao sul da Escócia onde começou a aplicar seus preceitos libertários. Deu aulas em King’s Alfred, uma escola londrina considerada progressista, mas não pode realizar grandes transformações. No ano de 1921, fundou a International School. Os problemas do pós – guerra fez com que a instituição mudasse de sede diversas vezes, até fixar-se num casarão de estilo vitoriano em Leiston, no condado de Suffolk, a 160 km da capital britânica.
O educador concretizou um sistema educativo em que o importante é a criança ter liberdade para escolher e decidir o que aprender e, com base nisso, desenvolver-se no próprio ritmo.
