Anton Makarenko
Makarenko nasceu em 1888 na Ucrânia. Era filho de um operário ferroviário e de uma dona de casa.
Como a maioria das crianças daquela época, aprendeu a ler e escrever em casa, com o auxílio da mãe e logo depois foi matriculado em uma escola primária. No colégio teve acesso ás disciplinas de língua russa, aritmética, geografia, história, ciências naturais, física, desenho, canto, ginástica e catecismo, mas infelizmente não pode estudar a sua língua materna, a ucraniana, pois foi proibida pelo império czarista na Rússia e nem lógica e filosofia, exclusivas da elite.
Ao completar 17 anos, Makarenko finalizou o curso de magistério e entrou em contato com as ideias de Lênin e Máximo Gorki, que influenciaram sua visão de mundo e de educação.
Em 1906, ocorreu sua primeira experiência em sala de aula, na Escola Primária das Oficinas Ferroviárias, onde ficou durante oito anos. Logo assumiu a direção de uma escola secundária. Com a ajuda dos pais e professores, ampliou o espaço cultural e modificou o currículo. Estabeleceu o ensino da língua ucraniana.
A experiência mais marcante foi quando assumiu a direção da Colônia Gorki, em 1920 a 1928, era uma instituição que atendia crianças e jovens órfãos que haviam vivido na marginalidade. Nesta escola ele pôs em prática um ensino que privilegiava a vida em comunidade, a participação da criança na organização da escola, o trabalho e a disciplina.
Morreu em 1939, de ataque cardíaco durante uma viagem de trem.
