Édouard Claparède
Édouard Claparède nasceu em Genebra, Suíça, em 1873. Médico psicólogo de uma tradicional família calvinista, foi um dos mais influentes expoentes europeus da escola da psicologia funcionalista, cujas pesquisas experimentais no campo da psicologia infantil tiveram grande influência na criação da pedagogia moderna, que incentiva a atitude participante do educando.
Após completar seus estudos médicos em Genebra (1897), passou um ano fazendo pesquisas em Paris, onde conheceu Alfred Binet, um dos principais criadores dos testes de inteligência, e retornou a Genebra para trabalhar com seu primo, Theodore Flournoy e lecionar na universidade local, ocupando a cátedra de psicologia na Universidade de Genebra, onde sucedeu a Theodore Flournoy, seu mestre.
Alguns de seus estudos influenciaram a teoria psicanalítica de Sigmund Freud. No ano de 1905, lançou Psicologia da Criança e Pedagogia Experiemntal que teve grande repercussão.
Em 1912, Claparède fundou o Instituto Jean – Jacques Rousseau, para o estudo da psicologia infantil e sua aplicação na educação. Seu trabalho foi continuado pelo discípulo Jean Piaget, que, como chefe do instituto, reformulou-o e integrou-o à Universidade de Genebra.
